Maruyata’s success for over a century owes everything to its customers. Our valued clients include those who have been buying our fish from our founder, and others whom our current owner has personally built a relationship with. One of our most memorable customers is the award-winning essayist Masako Shirasu (1910–1998), whom Sachi, the second-generation okami (proprietress), had the honor of providing service for thirty years. Every time Ms. Shirasu would stay in Kyoto she would stop by and buy her favorite seafood, guji. She would have one half of the sweet sea bream raw, sliced into sashimi, and the other half grilled with the scales intact. Such memories of her are depicted in essays written by her daughter and grandchild.
